Focuses

I. Green energy technology

In addition to the development of high efficiency energy resources and processes aimed at slowing down the consumption of energy, there should also be efforts to develop high efficiency, clean and environmentally compatible energy sources and their associated storage and conversion technologies so as to lower the dependence on fossil fuel and to ensure continued development in the Earth environment.

II. Green chemical processing and materials research

Chemical engineering is the most important foundation of Taiwan's manufacturing industry. In order to ensure sustainability and to protect the environment, the promotion of green chemical processing and materials research is unavoidable. With today's globalization, green manufacturing and materials that conform to the global environmental protection regulations will be a new opportunity for Taiwan to upgrade its domestic chemical materials industry and enter the international market.

III. Biotechnology

Future improvements of human health and quality of life rely on the development of biotechnology. Chemical engineering plays a key role and is indispensable in this area. In addition to the development of biochemical processing, the theoretical proof of feasibility of technologies, and the assurance that mass production is in line with economic benefits, there are other important research directions including biomedical materials development, research in drug release control and pharmaceuticals, detection of diseases, and research in tissues and cells.

IV. Value added of resource recycling

Taiwan lacks natural resources of its own and relies on imports for most metallic elements and fuel resources that are crucial to the development of most industries. For this reason, the special planning project calls for "quality improvement of non-crop biomass resources," and "value added recycled materials," with the expectation that the chemical engineering and food industries will devote to technology development and raise the R&D standards of domestic industries.
